Mental Health Awareness

Our in-house Mental Health Awareness training is conducted by our own qualified instructor.

By the end of this programme delegates will be familiar with the concept of mental health care, and will have acquired the knowledge and understanding of the skills required in caring for service-users with mental health problems.

This is a full day course and will involve a written test. A certificate will be issued once this test is passed.

Subjects covered by the course include;

• the role and duties of Healthcare Assistants
• their responsibilities
• commonly used sections of the Mental Health Act 1983
• observation skills
• different nursing interventions
• types of mental illness and treatments
• developing communication skills
• dual diagnosis
• dementia & Alzheimer’s
• eating disorders
• challenging behaviour
• diabetes (BM Stix)
• epilepsy
• blood pressure & TPR (Temperature, Pulse, Respiration)
• dual diagnosis

Delegates will be tutored in a number of mental health conditions, looking at the definition, symptoms, causes and treatments which are available for those conditions. In particular, delegates will look at:

• Depression
• Manic depression
• Post–natal depression
• Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD)
• Anxiety.
• Schizophrenia
• Paranoia
• Psychotic experiences
• Phobias
• Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
• Personality disorders
• Borderline personality disorder
• Self-harm
• Self-esteem
• Post-traumatic stress disorder
